Overwhelming Gratitude: Finding Enlightenment Through an MS Diagnosis

Spread the love

In this blog post, I want to talk about how I turned a negative situation into something positive and how I chose to see an autoimmune disease with an overload of gratitude.

YES, I don’t think I’ve ever been so grateful for the little things that occur daily.

I share my story with the hope that it provides support to anyone navigating challenges. This negative-to-positive shift can help you navigate any difficult moment.

Turning an Autoimmune Diagnosis Into an Overload of Gratitude

If someone had told me that Multiple Sclerosis would become one of The greatest teachers of MY life, I would’ve laughed, rolled my eyes, and probably would’ve gone dancing afterwards. But here I am—standing (sometimes wobbling), breathing, learning, and feeling a level of gratitude so deep it surprises even me.

MS didn’t arrive gently. It didn’t knock. It barged in like an uninvited guest with luggage and attitude.

But somewhere in the chaos, the fear, the confusion, and the “what did I do wrong” moments… something shifted. Something softened me.

Something awakened me.

And now, I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude—not for the illness itself, but for the enlightenment it forced me into.

Gratitude for the Slowing Down

Before MS, I lived a fast life. Too fast. I rushed through days like they were checklists, not moments.

MS said, “Sit down.” MS said, “Rest.” MS said, “Be here.”

And in that slowing down, I discovered:

  • The beauty of quiet mornings
  • The peace in doing one thing at a time
  • The joy of simply breathing
  • The sacredness of stillness

I didn’t know how much life I was missing until MS made me pause long enough to see it.

Gratitude for My Husband—My Human Cane and My Anchor

There are no words big enough for the gratitude I feel for this man who walks beside me.

He is MY balance when my legs become unsteady. He is MY calm when my body feels unpredictable. He is My grounding when the world tilts. He is My laughter when I need it most. He is My strength when mine is running low on battery.

Holding onto him isn’t a weakness. It’s a partnership. It’s trust. It’s love in motion.

Every time he steadies me, every time he slows his pace to match mine, every time he pretends he didn’t notice a wobble—I experience gratitude so profound it brings tears to my eyes.

MS didn’t just reveal my vulnerability. It revealed the depth of our bond.

Gratitude for the Clarity

MS stripped away the noise.

Suddenly, the things that had once felt urgent no longer did. The things that once felt important… weren’t.

The things that once drained me… no longer have access to me.

What mattered became clear:

  • Peace
  • Health
  • Love
  • Rest
  • Joy
  • Connection
  • Presence

MS didn’t give me clarity gently. It handed it to me like, “Here. You’re going to need this.”

And it was right.

Gratitude for the Strength I Didn’t Know I Had

I used to think strength meant pushing through everything. Now I know strength means the following:

  • Listening
  • Resting
  • Asking
  • Accepting
  • Laughing
  • Rising again

MS showed me a version of myself I didn’t know existed—softer, wiser, more patient, more resilient, more compassionate.

I’m grateful for her. I’m proud of her. I’m becoming her.

Gratitude for the Spiritual Awakening

MS cracked me open.

It forced me inward. It made me examine my life, my habits, my beliefs, my boundaries, and my purpose.

It taught me:

  • To honor my body
  • To trust my intuition
  • To surrender what I cannot control
  • To find meaning in the mess
  • To embrace the present moment
  • To love myself through every version

This awakening wasn’t peaceful. It wasn’t pretty. But it was real.

And I’m grateful for every lesson.

Gratitude for the Wobble (I walk like a Toddler)

Yes—I call it “walking like a toddler.”

That toddler wobble taught me humility. It taught me patience.

The wobble taught me a humor in myself that I didn’t know. The wobble taught me to lean—not just physically, but emotionally.

The wobble taught me that I don’t have to walk this journey alone.

My Enlightened Mind With MS

I never expected MS to bring enlightenment. But it did.

Not the soft, glowing, lotus-flower kind. The gritty, honest, “I’m learning as I go” kind.

The kind that makes you grateful for the following:

  • The people who love me
  • The body that carries me
  • The moments that ground me
  • The lessons that shape me
  • The strength that surprises me
  • The BEAUTIFUL life I’m still living

I am overwhelmed with gratitude—not for MS itself, but for the person I’m becoming because of it.

And that, to me, is enlightenment.
